Spend more time where the return is highest
Not all time is equal. Sort your activities by the time they take and the return they create, then move your hours toward what matters.
The goal is not simply to spend less time. It is to spend more of your time on the activities that create the greatest return.
The four quadrants
| Low time | High time | |
|---|---|---|
| High return | Leverage activities. Do more. Planning, learning, automation, exercise, strategic thinking, building systems. | Strategic investments. Protect. Building a business, raising children, developing expertise, writing a book, deep relationships. |
| Low return | Necessary maintenance. Streamline. Admin, email, errands, shopping, routine household tasks. | Time traps. Eliminate. Mindless scrolling, unnecessary meetings, constant interruptions, perfectionism, rework. |
Time Intelligence is the discipline of moving time away from time traps and toward leverage activities and strategic investments.
Reflection questions
- Which quadrant received most of my time this week?
- Which activity creates the greatest long-term return?
- Which activity takes time but creates very little value?
- What can I eliminate or streamline next week?
Your challenge this week
Review the last seven days and place each major activity in a quadrant. Pick one time trap to eliminate and replace it with a leverage activity or a strategic investment.
